rwrylsin: Lego Lisa (i-dalek)
*cough*sniffle*sneeze*

I caught the con lurgy relatively early, it combined with caffeine abuse and lack of sleep to leave me pretty out of it on Monday. I'm getting better now, but getting to work this morning was hard. Have returned to a Coke Zero on my desk, an entirely useless product. Also vegemite, I'll use that one.
At the moment the con is all a bit blurry, so I'll save detailed response until I have my notes.

A few random things for now: )

To make myself feel better about keeping (some of) my opinions to myself, I'll just note that the area behind my back gate was, as of Tuesday, still litter-free. It isn't always so, but regular clean-ups seem to be occurring.

So, back to Interaction.
Apparently there were over 4000 warm bodies in the halls on Sunday (no count of cold ones was given), but it didn't feel like it. The only times I was even vaguely aware of the size of the event were at the major events and ceremonies. Perhaps it was the venue - the paths in the Dealers Room were wide and uncrowded, I spent little time in the small panel rooms, and the long expanse of the concourse proved an easy place to find people. I'm quite accustomed to not knowing the majority of people at an event, the fact that I kept bumping into people I did know made it feel quite small really.
One thing which has become clear to us in our UK-congoing is that UK-fans like their Real Ale. Every con so far has sought to reassure the members that this time there really will be enough ale and the hotel will not run out. And every time the fans take it as a challenge, and the bar is drunk dry. This time the organisers accepted that they simply couldn't persuade the Hotel to order in enough, and arranged for the brewery to keep a large stock of ale ready for quick delivery, promising that if the bar ran out it wouldn't be for long. Once more the fen rose to the challenge, and drank the brewery dry. At least of some varieties. I am both amused and impressed.
I didn't notice any civil disorder, so I guess fen are happy drunks.

So, the convention.
Thursday )
Friday )
Saturday )

As previously recounted; Sunday and Monday and Aftermath.

Final analysis: Fun! Just the right length - finished while I still wanted more but was too exhausted to continue. Met many nice people, said hello to old friends, and saw remarkably few panels.

End of Con

Still too tired to complete to the Con report, but I'll try to keep up with the present.
The Dead Dog Party last night was good. We arrived fashionably late and raided the remains of the food in the Volunteer Party. Grabbed some free books and posters (oops, just realised that [livejournal.com profile] kriste's poster was rolled up with ours and now she's gone home without it... guess we'll deliver it next time we're in the area). Then the auction started.
Lots of neat stuff we don't need going cheap, from multi-region DVD players to packs of rubber bands. These were the convention supplies that were no longer needed, and in many cases hadn't been used at all. Since we have so little space we restrained ourselves (except for one anime DVD), but I decided I would get some of the packs of paper if I could get them cheap. Printer paper is always useful, and a pack of 500 sheets for a pound or two would be a good buy.
I ended up with a box of 5 packs of pink paper, another with 5 packs of green paper, and one pack each of white, blue, yellow and a sort of peach colour, all for £3.60. I don't know what I'm going to do with it all, but I'm sure I'll think of something.
We shuffled that lot out of the way, and after watching the bidding for a while longer I wandered off to find David and see who else was around. Things get vague again after that, we talked to people... about... stuff. One room now had big sheets of paper up on the walls inviting people to write about their con experiences, which made entertaining reading. At about 1am the party was still going strong, but the houseguests and I were feeling tired and footsore, so we collected my paper supplies and caught a taxi home. [livejournal.com profile] davidcook remained behind to party until dawn.

Today I slept until 10ish, dozed until 11ish, said farwell to [livejournal.com profile] kriste then dozed some more until 12:30 or so. Still tired but thought I should probably get up. We took [livejournal.com profile] mireille21 to an ATM, then the post office to send books back to Aus (pricey!), then to the delivery centre to collect a parcel. We were then feeling exhausted again so flopped about at home until it was time to take her to the airport. Got to see the new "average speed" cameras on the M77, which was a little annoying since we were trying to get to Prestwick in the time we had allowed for getting to Glasgow airport. Got there in time, the place was crawling with Worldcon refugees. Did the grocery shopping on the way back, but I think I may have been sleepwalking for much of that. Ordered in Pizza for dinner because we really didn't feel like standing up long enough to cook.

I now have the remains of [livejournal.com profile] mireille21's Bundaberg OP Rum, which will be very nice in Hot Chocolate, a ginger cake from [livejournal.com profile] kriste which will probably disappear rather quickly, and yet more Vegemite. I think I now have at least two years worth of Vegemite in the cupboard, if anyone wants some come and visit.

Now it's time I went to bed, I have work tomorrow.

Have just had a little nap, and will now attempt an entry before everything disappears from my mind. You can assume through this narrative that we regularly stopped to catch up with various folk, the details of which are kind of blurry now.

Sunday )
Today so far... )

Thu-Sat will follow ... probably tomorrow. Then e-mail catch-up.

Today we went to the Glasgow open meeting for the 2005 Worldcon.
Details cut because they won't interest most people )

Glasgow strikes me as an excellent city for an SF Worldcon. Everywhere you look there is architecture that looks like it belongs in a vintage SF movie. A generally nifty place.
