In the 3.5 years since having kids I've had more practice using my First Aid kit and knowledge than in my entire life previously (I guess I was around 10 when first learning some basics at Brownies). I've actually had to shop for new supplies!
Alistair will now tell you that he is "In the Wars" because he has had so many ouchies lately that he can't even remember them all.

Aside from the expected plasters on various scrapes and taking of temperatures, there's been first aid for minor burns and scalding, syringing stuff out of eyes, various assessments of injury severity, and bandaging up a particularly messy cut on my own thumb (which was a challenge). Probably other stuff I've forgotten.
Now Ms0 is getting in on the act, choking on a bit of pasta. I thought I cleared it all out when she first seemed to have trouble with it sticking, but apparently not.

If you gave me a pop quiz on first aid response I would struggle, I never feel like I've absorbed much from my training. And yet, so far when the knowledge is actually needed it has always popped into my head for application.
So baby got tipped mostly upside down, offending bit of pasta popped out before I could finishing wondering what step was next if this didn't work. If they're too big for that maneuver you can put them over your lap, but at that moment she apparently weighed nothing at all.

As is the way with these things, it was all over before I had time to get more than mildly concerned. Later, I am very glad to have had that training, because how scary it would be to see your baby choking and not know what to do.
I must make time to update mine next year...

So yeah, the pamphlets are true. If you plan to become a parent go get some first aid training that applies to infants/young kids. You'll get good value from it.

You can also slap them on the back about 5 times IIRC to dislodge whatever is stuck. We still have a respiratory mask and instructions all over the house (on the fridge, in the pram, in the bedroom... probably should stick some up in the dining room actually.)

Fortunately Michael's only choked on water so far, and cleared it without too much hassle. Scary when they choke though.

Did you do the first aid training for babies as part of the antenatal stuff?
