These days Bub treats us to long and enthusiastic lectures. Mostly babble, but increasingly it is possible to piece together a story from them. (Often stories involving ducks and frogs).
After his last pool visit, in the afternoon I got "Babble babble lots of cars! Babble babble fast! Babble swim good! Babble people swim! Babble splash!"
Today we had his first swim class at the new place. I'm glad we started where we did, this place was much noisier and probably because of that the lesson seemed a lot less personal. Would have been too much for Bub a year ago.
As it was, he spent the first half of the lesson saying "All done!" and trying to get out of the pool. (At least he got lots of paddling practice trying to reach the edge). Then we started jumping in from the edge of the pool and that changed his outlook completely. Finished with running along a floating mat to jump in, he bobbed up each time grinning and shouting "Again!". Didn't want to leave and tried to leap back into the pool when the class was over.
Then he was into creche while I went to the gym. He tried very hard to be brave, his lip quivered but he held back tears and when the carer asked if he wanted to sit on her lap he held up his arms to be picked up. Didn't quite make it, he burst into tears as I made my final exit, but they report that he recovered quickly and even joined in with the activities this time.
On the way home I asked him what he did, he replied "Toys." What toys did you play with? "Trucks".
That's like a proper conversation!
Yesterday we visited friends with a slightly younger toddler. David reports that when they were outside and both had cups of water, Bub tried to go "Cheers" with her. We were slightly astounded on our way out the gate to go home when he followed up "Bye" with her name (or a recognisable approximation). I think that's the first time he's used someone's name. Not sure if he was just imitating his dad or not.
