Post Millenium
Aug. 5th, 2009 11:43 amI created this journal in Dec 2003. Just over 5.5 years for 1000 posts.
I'm a lousy correspondent, this is my way of allowing people to keep in touch with what I'm up to in life. It's also my external memory, since I tend not to hold on to the details of my past and sometimes it's very handy to be able to look up exactly when it was that I did something. Now that I've formed the habit I'll probably keep going for a while yet.
I have considered a retrospective, philosophy or poetry for this post. However that all seems rather forced and silly to confine worthwhile topics to an arbitrary number.
Instead I shall use this milestone for a policy statement.
Friends List: I consider this to be a reading list. If you want to "de-friend", go right ahead. I won't read too much into it, and even in "real life" my friends are free to come and go in my life as they please. I apply this from my end as well. If you're on my list, I'm reading (time permitting). If I drop you, consider it a mark of respect that I consider you to be capable of going on with your life without my constant supervision and approval ;) In my world, to keep you on the list and then ignore you is very insulting.
Locked Posts: Given that this journal is largely an open letter for family to follow, most posts are not locked, at least for a while to give people a chance to drop by and read them. However posts about work, that include personal details such as address etc, or that I otherwise need or want to remove from the public domain, may be locked immediately or after some delay.
For casual readers: Locked posts can be read if you have an LJ account and have me add you to the friends list. Free accounts are available. You're really not missing anything interesting if you can't see them.
Comments: I enjoy all your comments. I know I'm bad at replying, sorry. Some days I'm up for small talk, mostly I never get around to it. I'm also not a frequent commenter on the journals of others - again with the small talk, I generally only comment If I've got something vaguely useful to say.
Anonymous comments are screened, but if they're not spam or otherwise annoying I'll clear them as soon as I notice them.
Memes: I generally don't bother any more. If you have a question, ask, anytime you like. I'll make it a post if the answer is long or interesting enough.
Dreamwidth: I have an account, I'm not using it and haven't logged in for ages. Although I think I have some friend requests outstanding there, so I'll try to remember to drop by soon. I have a permanent account here, know how everything works, and LJ works for what I do so I have no pressing desire to move. I'll let you all know if I change my mind on that.
And that's the 1000th post. We shall soon return you to your regular updates on the house.
But now, it's time for dumplings...
