rwrylsin: Lego Lisa (i-dalek)

On the weekend I finally caught up with the new series of Robin Hood, or at least the second half of the episode. I did see the last 5 minutes of the 1st episode and backed away slowly, but one shouldn't judge but the first episode, even the last five minutes.

I wonder if they're trying to do with Robin Hood what Hercules: The Legendary Journeys did to Greek mythology. There's the same peculiar mix of dramatic heroism and really bad jokes (and complete disregard for the mythology it's borrowing characters from).
At the end when it was clear the villagers were about to celebrate I even felt moved to utter the H:TLJ catch-cry "Everybody raise your right arm!"[1]. Sadly they didn't, they just bounced around a lot.
Now, I found H:TLJ very amusing for about 3 seasons, then pretty much lost interest. I'm not sure if it's because it became to caught up in the dramatic angsting hero stuff that wasn't it's best feature IMO, or because weak puns eventually lose their charm[2]. I think the former, there were still good silly episodes later on (frequently the ones with an absent Hercules) but most just didn't want (re)watching.

In any case, while Robin Hood did have some laugh-out-loud bad joke moments ("I shot the sheriff!" "No, you shot the deputy."), the bits in between just seemed too stilted and painful to be worth the effort. I may tune in again if I remember to see how it's going with that.

[1] Or was it the left arm? I forget.
[2] or just because Xena was better

Then we had Torchwood, tuning in along with most of the rest of the UK apparently.
Seemed a bit stilted and awkward, as first episodes often do, but has promise. I look forward to seeing what the writers come up with once they settle in.
My favourite line was the throwaway CSI:Cardiff comment on calculating the velocity of a kebab - that's the Glasgow influence on my sense of humour.

Now just waiting for BSG to return...
