We have a new heating system now (the old one dated to 1988, the new one will be a lot more efficient). It ended up costing only half what I thought it would - apparently the ducts they used back then are nigh-indestructable, unlike the current ones which are designed to be replaced every 10 years along with the heating unit.

This left me with some unexpected cash left over from the tax return. So I bought a Thermomix, something I didn't think I'd be able to afford any time in the near future.
Review from the first month )

So, conclusion so far: It's a great food processor that can also cook. I don't have a proper food processor so I'm finding it very useful in that capacity. I do have a good mixer, rice steamer and a breadmaker, and those I think will still have a place in my kitchen for the tasks they do better.

Before I thought I could by a Thermomix I was looking at slow-cookers. Still waiting to determine if I'm going to want one of those anyway. So far it seems a little too good at chopping stuff even when in reverse, so I'm not getting the sort of chunks I'm accustomed to. I'm also running up against it's relatively small capacity sometimes (because cooking in bulk to freeze is a thing I do).

One thing that does really annoy me is the built in scale. It's fussy - nudge the power cord and it gets confused because of their relative positions in the unit. It officially only measures in 5g increments - but often skips 20g at a time even when I pause in the hope it will update, which doesn't inspire trust in its accuracy. They specifically say not to use it for amounts of less that 25g.
I'm a near-enough-is-good-enough cook, it's not a big deal, but if you're going to put a scale into a device that costs the best part of $2000, it should be a bloody decent scale.

Reading some of the comment threads in Thermomix forums you get the impression this is a magical food production device. I'm not seeing the magic - maybe it's my personality, or maybe it's that while I'm no Masterchef contestant, I do know how to cook and it doesn't actually take me very long to prepare meals the old fashioned way. I like it, it is a very handy tool, and it is kind of cool when I can leave it cooking and stirring, while I tidy the kitchen instead of having to watch it and then clean up later. I expect to get value for money, but I was hoping to be wowed.
