Another April 1 Survived
Apr. 1st, 2009 01:42 pmI seem to be more tolerant of April Fools Day now. I've decided it may be a good idea for people to spend a day being cynical and paranoid about everything they're told. Maybe some will remember that every-day news deserves the same skeptical examination.
I do however make two demands of pranks:
It should be possible for the target to identify it as prank. The mere fact it is April 1 is not enough.
It should have a point. Ideally a clever one, but some sort of point beyond self-promotion.
Running ads then admitting on your website that it's a prank is cool, anyone who bothers to check can get in on the joke. Not sure about the Mayor announcing plans to dam the Yarra, but if they were talking about flooding Scotch College then that should probably have been a tip-off for people.
I can't see the point of shrink-wrapping cars.
Now, if the little cards had said something like "Complimentary Exterior Dry Clean from Ultimate-Water-Saver Car Wash Pty Ltd", that would be another matter entirely.
(In a gross lack of imagination, the cards only said "Happy April Fools", but did net plenty of publicity)
I still see pranks against family and friends that rely on the relationship to be a violation of trust. Some trust is necessary, and a good thing.
I'm glad none of my work colleagues are inclined to be pranksters.
