Friday night we toddled along to the Glasgow Open venue to help set up. Pistes were measured and marked, scoring apparatus set up, chatty beginners whipped back into action. Could have used a few more people, but a reasonably good showing and we got most things done before we were kicked out a little after 9pm.

Saturday I gave David a warm-up lesson before the epee started, something I still need more practice at, then slouched around for a couple of hours until it was my turn to register and warm-up.
Lost one bout in each poule. Probably shouldn't have in the first round, but I was a little surprised to find I had two tricky people of opposite styles in the poule.
Finished up 3rd, knocked out by the girl for whom I have been the arch-Nemesis for a while. Not so happy about that, mainly because I ended up covered in bruises and that always pisses me off. At least I did mostly remember that revenge is best delivered with point attacks and not in kind.
(She showed me her collection of bruises the next day as well. I was less than sympathetic though since A: She started it. B: All my bruises are from her, hers had been collected from a variety of annoyed opponents, and C: She won, albeit by beating us all into submission.)
Anyhoo, it wasn't a bad effort given my (entirely voluntary) poor training history this year. Must remember that any competition failure seems to have far more to do with lack of motivation than the coaching per se. It would be quite fair to say my heart wasn't really in it.
Collected medal, helped tidy hall, then went home to devour protein and carbs with a few token vitamins before falling into bed.

Sunday, up earlyish again to the sight of snow falling, we dragged ourselves back just in time for the start of the Women's foil. This was important because I had promised to loan my breastplate to one of the Beginners after persuading her to enter the foil the night before. She did pretty well, and seems to be hooked now.
Then spent most of the rest of the day in the kitchen. After an initial clean-up I ended up in the cooking corner, because keeping track of the three production lines and anticipating/pattern-matching for future demand is something that comes naturally to me. Provided I have someone else to make the sandwiches for the toasties, otherwise I lose track.
Finished the day ripping up strips and shifting equipment out of the hall as quickly as possible. Went home with a couple of bottles of thank-you wine, disappeared a large quantity of pasta, fell into bed.
Oh, and GWEFC won the Best Club trophy back. Cajoling all our beginners into fencing for us paid dividends.

And so I start another week as a zombie. Next weekend is currently free and will hopefully stay that way. (Although I may drag David out castle hunting if my feet forgive me.)
