World Traveller
Apr. 11th, 2008 12:53 pmAnd now I have my new Aussie Passport!
It also has a chip, hidden away in the middle rather than visible on the back of the photo page as the UK chip is.
It instructs me not to "bend, perforate or expose to extreme temperatures or excess moisture". "In addition to the normal care and respect afforded to a passport ... [ensure] that it does not become wet, folded or mutilated. Abuse may adversely affect the operation of the chip". [1]
I used an identical photo for each passport, but in the Aussie one I merely look pale rather than dead.
The Aussie passport cost slightly more than the UK passport, but it does come with a protective sleeve and 68-page booklet of hints and advice for Australian travellers. And only a few of those pages are devoted to what you're not allowed to bring back to Australia.
[1] The Aussie UK Consulate FAQ does include "Q19 - I washed my passport, ...", and I've seen a few passports folded into jeans pockets, so one can reasonably assume Aussies do not consider it normal care to keep a passport dry, flat and unmutilated.
