Toy catalogs are scary things. I really shouldn't look.

What do we think folks?
Toy Cleaning Trolley, is it better or worse than the toy McDonalds set?

I think I may have had a toy vacuum cleaner at one stage, my mother missed a trick by not handing me the real one. Somehow a cleaning trolley seems worse though. More obvious I guess.

I also can't believe that McD's set is still around. I was boggled enough when I first saw it in the UK.

On the plus side, it's not pink.

Our IT departmental end-of-financial-year "roadshow" was held this afternoon. Aside from IT stuff they tell us a bit about where the business is going, and briefly touched on the carbon tax issue.

I thought this was interesting, and as it is often useful to have specific examples I'll share it in case any of you find yourselves needing such a thing. This is all public data you could officially ask for if you wanted to.

Over the last few years our well-know Supermarket business has been busy making energy savings in various ways, with the net effect that they've managed to offset all the rises in electricity prices and keep the costs steady (about a 40% reduction in total electricity use). They've also been cutting down on things like paper use and the like (for cost reasons of course, although green credentials are a nice bonus).

At this point, they believe they have enough additional potential savings identified on top of what they've already done to offset about 2/3rds to 3/4ths of the impact of the carbon tax.
They're also essentially saying to all their suppliers "this is what we're doing - we expect you to do the same". (Because they don't want to pay any more for the supplies if they can avoid it).

So yes, a price on carbon will have an impact on business behaviour, and in groceries at least there's enough competition that they'll be trying very hard not to increase costs.

Okay, I think we've just about decided what we're watching at MIFF this year.

We've got mini-passes again, and this time I'm determined to get maximum use from them. Which hasn't proved too hard, I could easily have included plenty more if it weren't for time and scheduling constraints.

Strangely enough, I've never made Swedish Meatballs before. Don't even remember eating them although I'm pretty sure I must have at some point.
However I had the urge to do something meatball-ish, so thought I'd give it a go. Results were delicious so here's the recipe )

Finally, had a random surprise encounter with my brother on the tram coming home tonight. We're not what you'd call a close family, I think it's been nearly 2 years since I last saw him, and we don't keep in touch. Apparently he's currently working just around the corner from me, although neither of us are planning to be in the area much longer.

My grandparents had an outdoor dunny of the classic variety, connected to a sceptic tank.  It was the one thing I really didn't like about visiting them, the little outhouse with it's cobwebs and spiders.  As a mild arachnophobe night time visits were particularly awful, but the experience probably did help me HTFU.

Edit: Yay, Raquel made good in ep 3.

I have a cold, and it seems to be hitting me rather hard so I feel quite blah. I hope I will get through it quickly and be well again by the time I start my leave on Thursday.

My long weekend will be spent at Continuum 7 (Friday evening is free if you're in Melbourne and curious, but not curious enough to spend money).
I'll be presiding over the badge-making on Friday, on Saturday I'm bringing some overt philosophy to a panel, and on Sunday I'm running the fencing workshop and helping David with the juggling one. Monday I get to relax and spectate.

Cat run is all done except the all-important pet door. Need to order an extra tunnel bit to go through the wall. We shut the kittens in it for a while yesterday and Abby showed us all the escape points so we could plug them. Ella seems to quite like pottering around in there, Abby likes it but considers the netting a personal insult. I imagine she'll be happier once she can come and go on her own terms.

...

I think there is other stuff, but my brain isn't working so it will have to wait for next time.
Lego Lisa
Hmmm, I don't seem to have updated in a while. Might be something to do with the fact that every time I sit at the computer I end up holding a kitten.

They are still cute little charmers, despite today pulling the tablecloth off the table, along with everything sitting on it. Abby is still physically smaller, but seems to have become the dominant kitten now.
I've been keeping some catgrass inside for them since they gnawed through my chili plant.

We had people over for a games day on Saturday. Went well, lots of people, I played Settlers of Catan, En Guarde, Mu and Roborally after a break for home made pizza and Dr Who. Eventually got to bed at something like 2am.
The kittens were a bit overwhelmed to start with, but mostly stuck around and allowed people to admire and pet them a little. Earlier in the afternoon Abby went AWOL outside for a couple of hours which had us a bit worried since she normally doesn't like to be alone and will come looking for us if we head inside.
Definitely need to get the cat-run finished.

The fencing club is going well, still slowly growing so we have a pretty good crowd at Saturday training now. This means people are more interested in spending time free-fencing and I can do some individual lessons, but I do sort of miss having time to talk to everyone individually.
Looks like we'll be doing two or three more public demos this year as well, so I think we're doing well for our size on that front.

Sunday was mostly slept through, with a bit of shopping and starting to watch the DVD stack I want to get through before Continuum.

Don't think anything has happened house-wise since the last update, we're in savings mode.

I could definitely get used to 5-day weekends. This full 5-day week was a shock to the system, but I softened it by working from home today. Feel like I'm fighting off a bug, I've rather gotten used to being healthy so that won't do at all.

I was on call for work over Easter, so tethered fairly closely to the house. But it was nice to spend some time pottering around the sunny garden, and I basically treated the whole thing as my 5-day birthday weekend. Saw a couple of movies (Thor and Sucker Punch) watched a couple of DVDs (Whisper of the Heart and The Cat Returns), and even read a bit.
I am now being constantly amused by how much Ella's motion mirrors that of Studio Ghibli cats.

I'm sure there was other stuff for this post... but it escapes me at the moment.

Most work recently has been focused on the garden, to the detriment of routine housework.

There is likely to be a few marmalade based recipe experiments in the next few weeks/months as I make an effort to use up my store of kumquat and cinnamon marmalade.
As usual I can't help but fiddle with any recipe I find, so successes shall be recorded here.

First experiment is quite tasty )

Meanwhile, back in the UK they're apparently in the final days of campaigning in a referendum to change the voting system. Instead of First Past The Post (where you only get to put one mark on the paper, something I found very unsatisfying) they're considering a preferential voting system like ours (where we get to pick 1st, 2nd, 3rd choices etc).

Out of curiosity I had a look at someone's link to a "No to AV" leaflet. After all, what's not to like about preferences? Apparently 6 out of 10 Australians don't like our system and want to switch back to the UK system. I am boggled.

Mostly I'm boggled at the idea that 6 out of 10 Australians would even know what the UK system actually is.

Con report below. I took almost no photos all weekend I'm afraid. )

So, that was our trip. Returned feeling very relaxed and happy.
Next Oz Discworld con is planned for 2013 in Melbourne. Some of you might be pleased to hear that there are plans afoot for some sort of mini-event to be held in the off years, Adelaide and Brisbane/GoldCoast are arguing about who gets 2012. Which is to say that they both want 2012. Personally if it was me I'd be letting the other team take 2012 and aiming for 2014, but that would be because I'm a cantankerous and slightly pessimistic old convention hack.

Before I get to the holiday post, which will be very long, a quick update on the house.

And this got pretty long as well )

We're heading off to the Discworld convention tomorrow. At the moment I have no idea what I've packed or what I still need, but hopefully we'll arrive with everything we require.

Probably no updates while we're away, but I'll try to take enough notes for a con report when I get back. Since I haven't managed anything for the last couple of cons I should probably do so - otherwise I don't remember it at all.

I hope my brain kicks into gear soon...
